Things to do in Port Alberni

We encourage you to spend a little time exploring Port Alberni while you’re here! Here are some of our favourite things to see and do, and places to eat, while you’re in town.

What to do?

1. Vancouver Island Soaring Centre:
Obviously we are going to put this at the top of the list! Experience the freedom of gliding high above the stunning landscapes of Port Alberni. Take a tandem glider flight with experienced pilots, enjoying breathtaking views and the sensation of soaring like a bird. www.gogliding.ca

2. Explore Sproat Lake:
Known for its crystal-clear waters and picturesque surroundings, Sproat Lake Provincial Park is just down the road from the airport. Enjoy water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply relax and swim in the luxuriously clean and warm waters. Don't miss the opportunity to catch sight of the famous Martin Mars Water Bombers - they are due to depart forever to the BC Aviation Museum in Victoria, and the Pima Air & Space Museum in Arizona later in 2024.

3. Historic McLean Mill National Historic Site:
Delve into the area's rich history at McLean Mill, a National Historic Site. This well-preserved sawmill showcases the industrial heritage of Port Alberni. Take a guided tour to witness the impressive steam-operated machinery in action, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's logging past.

4. Alberni Pacific Railway:
We are super excited to hear that the Alberni Pacific Railway is back up and running for 2024! Catch a ride along the waterfront of Port Alberni pulled by the #11 Diesel Locomotive, or take a ride in the #102 Logging Crew Speeder. If things go well, the steam engine will hopefully return to action on the full length track (to McLean Mill) in the future.

5. Hiking & Biking in the Alberni Valley:
The terrain around the Alberni Valley is ideally suited to hiking and mountain biking. If you’re into biking, the Riders of Alberni Valley (ROAV) are joining forces to formalize the trail network and gain official access to some of the best trails on the island. For hikers and walkers, there are numerous waterfalls, lookouts and adventures to be found.

6. Sail the MV Frances Barkley down the Alberni Inlet:
Looking for a unique day trip? Hop aboard a working ship known for the essential services it provides to people in the remote communities of the inlet. The 36-metre vessel can carry up to 144 passengers and 100 tons of cargo. Sail along the majestic Alberni Inlet to the historic town of Bamfield and experience the spectacular sights. Aquatic wildlife, remote communities, beautiful views and salt water air await you!

7. The “Salmon Capital of the World”
Whether you like fly fishing on rivers or heading out in the open waters of the ocean, Port Alberni has got the fishing for you. It was even crowned the Ultimate Fishing Town by The Fishing Network in 2010.

WHERE TO EAT?

Grassroots Cafe:
Hands down our favourite place to eat in Port Alberni is the Grassroots Cafe at Harbour Quay. Fresh farm-sourced ingredients, the best coffee in town, and food made with love. You can’t beat that! Rumour has it they are opening up a spot closer to the airport soon too!

Della’s Cafe:
Just down the road, further West from the airport turnoff, is the lakeside lunch and coffee spot, Della’s Cafe. The taco truck is often outside too!

Brie & Barrel:
For a nice sit-down dinner in town, the Brie and Barrel (owned by the Mayor!) is a great spot on Argyle St, set in a restored heritage building.

Breweries Galore!
You know a town is starting to find its feet again, when craft breweries start popping up all over town! They all have great beer and good food menus…so you’ll just have to do a pub crawl to find your favourite! Dog Mountain Brewing might have the best rooftop patio and view in town. I think Twin City Brewing was the first to open their doors, and their pizza is killer. Alberni Brewing has a nice patio and plenty of seating for those post adventure hangouts.
